Treatment Process
How obesity treatment proceeds — from the first call to results
We know the first step is the hardest. That is why we have prepared a detailed description of what awaits you at each step — no surprises.
Book your first appointment
Step 1: Booking and Preparation
Call us or book online. You will receive an appointment within a few days — no long waiting times.
Before your visit, it is essential to get blood tests done and bring the results to your first appointment. Without them, the doctor cannot begin treatment.
Required blood tests:
- complete blood count (CBC)
- AST, ALT, gamma GT (liver function tests)
- urea, creatinine (kidney function)
- TSH (thyroid function)
- fasting glucose (blood sugar)
- HbA1c (long-term blood sugar) — this usually needs to be requested and paid for separately, so mention it specifically when ordering
- cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides (lipid panel)
- vitamin D (optional)
Most of these tests are included in standard blood test packages. In Ljubljana, several laboratories accept walk-ins without prior booking — you can even get them done on the day of your appointment. You must fast (at least 8 hours without food) before the blood draw. Also bring a list of medications you are taking and information about previous weight loss attempts.
Step 2: First Consultation (~30–45 minutes)
Discussion and examination
The doctor discusses your health condition, goals and expectations. Examination: weight, height, blood pressure, waist circumference.
Body composition analysis
Bioimpedance measurement: fat mass, muscle mass, visceral fat, hydration, basal metabolism. Takes 2 minutes, painless.
Treatment plan
The doctor recommends the most suitable obesity medication based on your condition, goals and budget. Explains dosing, injection technique and expected side effects. Advises on nutrition for muscle preservation. Issues a private prescription.
Step 3: Start of Treatment
Take the prescription to the pharmacy and collect the medication. You can receive the first injection at the clinic (the doctor shows the technique) or at home following instructions. You start with the lowest dose. The medication is injected once a week.
Step 4: Monthly Monitoring
- Body composition measurement — progress monitoring
- Review of side effects
- Dose adjustment (gradual increase to target dose)
- New prescription for the next month
- Nutritional advice and motivation
Step 5: Maintaining Results
When you reach your target weight, the doctor plans with you the gradual reduction of dose (no sudden discontinuation), reinforcement of healthy eating habits and physical activity, occasional follow-up appointments to monitor maintenance and reintroduction of medication if necessary. Obesity treatment is a long-term process — our goal is not just weight loss, but lasting change.
Typical Timeline
- Months 1–2Starting dose, adjustment, first results
- Months 3–4Dose increase, visible weight loss (5–10 kg)
- Months 5–8Target dose, stable loss (~1–2 kg/month)
- Months 9–12Approaching target weight
- Months 12–18Stabilisation and planning for the future
* Results are individual.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Treatment Process
How long does the first consultation take?
Approximately 30–45 minutes. It includes a discussion with the doctor, measurements, body composition analysis, review of results and preparation of an individual treatment plan.
Do I need to bring blood test results?
Yes, blood test results are essential for the first appointment — without them, the doctor cannot begin treatment. You need: CBC, AST, ALT, gamma GT, urea, creatinine, TSH, fasting glucose, HbA1c, cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides, and optionally vitamin D. HbA1c usually needs to be requested separately. Tests can be done at your GP or at a walk-in laboratory in Ljubljana — even on the day of your appointment. You must fast before the blood draw.
How often are follow-up appointments?
In the first months (during dose titration), we recommend monthly appointments. Once you reach a stable dose and stable weight loss, the interval can be extended to every 2–3 months.
Do I have to inject myself?
Yes, but it is very simple. The medication is administered with a pre-filled pen under the skin — the needle is very thin, the process takes a few seconds. We show you the technique at the first consultation. Most patients get used to it quickly.
What if the medication does not work?
If after 3–4 months (at the target dose) there is insufficient weight loss, the doctor recommends switching to a different medication or generation of medication. Non-response to medication is rare, but possible.
Is the treatment painful?
No. Injection is practically painless — the needle is very thin. The bioimpedance measurement is also painless. The only discomfort may be transient side effects of the medication (nausea), which decrease in the first few weeks.
