BMI isn't everything — also check your waist

The diagnosis of obesity is based on BMI and anthropometric measurements. Even if your BMI is below 30, excess fat tissue is confirmed by two measurements above the threshold.

Waist circumference≥ 88 cm≥ 102 cm
Waist-to-hip ratio≥ 0.80≥ 0.95

All measurements are taken at our clinic during the first consultation.

Body composition analysis using bioimpedance

Body Composition Analysis

Bioimpedance analysis accurately measures the proportion of fat, muscle and water — separately by body segment.

BMI Categories according to the World Health Organisation

The WHO has defined six BMI categories, each with a different health risk.

The number on the scale doesn't tell the whole story

BMI is a useful screening tool, but has limitations. It does not distinguish between muscle and fat mass. A person with high muscle mass may have a high BMI but a low body fat percentage — and vice versa.

A person with a normal BMI may have an excessive proportion of dangerous visceral fat, which surrounds the internal organs and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

For a more accurate assessment, we recommend body composition analysis using the bioimpedance method, which in 5 minutes measures the proportion of fat, muscle and water — separately per body segment.

When to seek professional help?

A consultation with a doctor is recommended in the following cases:

  • Your BMI is 30 or more
  • Your BMI is between 27 and 30 and you have a comorbidity (diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnoea)
  • You have already tried several diets or weight-loss programmes without lasting success

Frequently asked questions about BMI

What is BMI and how is it calculated?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a numerical indicator of the ratio between body weight and height. Formula: BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)². For example, a person weighing 80 kg and 1.75 m tall has a BMI = 80 / (1.75 × 1.75) = 26.1.
What BMI is ideal?
According to World Health Organisation (WHO) criteria, an ideal BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9. Within this range the health risk is lowest. Values below 18.5 indicate underweight; values of 25–29.9 indicate overweight.
From what BMI is obesity diagnosed?
Obesity starts at a BMI of 30.0 or more. There are three grades: grade I (BMI 30–34.9), grade II (BMI 35–39.9) and grade III, or severe obesity (BMI 40 or more). Each grade requires a different treatment approach.
Does BMI differ by sex?
The WHO BMI cut-offs are the same for both sexes; however, women on average have a higher percentage of body fat at the same BMI as men. For a more accurate assessment we recommend bioimpedance body composition analysis.
Can I lower my BMI with modern obesity treatment?
Yes. Modern medications for obesity treatment, prescribed by a doctor, achieve clinically significant weight loss in clinical studies with long-term use. Treatment is medically recommended for individuals with a BMI of 30 or more (obesity), or a BMI of 27 or more with a comorbidity. Consult a doctor at our clinic about the suitability of treatment.
Why is BMI not enough for a diagnosis of obesity?
BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat mass, nor does it account for fat distribution. A person with high muscle mass may have a high BMI without obesity, and conversely — a person with a normal BMI may have dangerous visceral fat. For an accurate diagnosis we measure waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio and perform bioimpedance analysis.
