What is Sports Injury Ultrasound?
Ultrasound diagnostics of sports injuries is an indispensable tool for fast and precise assessment of muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints after an injury or overload. Our service is available to everyone who participates in sport – regardless of level: professional athletes, recreational sportspeople and young athletes in their growth phase. When booking, select the appropriate service based on the injury location: muscle ultrasound, joint ultrasound, or soft tissue ultrasound. Inform the doctor during the examination that it involves a sports injury.
With ultrasound we examine:

When is sports ultrasound recommended?
How does the examination proceed?
A sports injury ultrasound examination is completely painless and safe, taking approximately 15–30 minutes:
- 1The injured area is uncovered and you lie or sit in a comfortable position.
- 2The doctor applies gel to the skin for better probe contact.
- 3A high-frequency probe examines the muscles, tendons and joints at rest.
- 4Dynamic examination: the doctor also assesses structures during movement – a key advantage of ultrasound over MRI.
- 5Results and recommendations are explained to you immediately after the examination.
Ultrasound does not use ionising radiation – suitable for all age groups, including adolescents, and repeated examinations.

No special preparation is needed. Please note the following:

Frequently asked questions
How do I book a sports ultrasound?
There is no separate 'sports ultrasound' service – select the service based on the injury location (muscle ultrasound for muscle injuries, joint ultrasound for joint injuries, soft tissue ultrasound for tendon and ligament injuries).
How much does a sports injury ultrasound cost in Ljubljana?
An ultrasound of one joint or region (e.g. knee, shoulder, ankle) costs €90, while an examination of two joints or regions costs €150. It is a self-pay service without a referral. An appointment is available within 24–48 hours.
Can ultrasound detect a torn muscle or tendon?
Yes, ultrasound is very effective at detecting muscle and tendon tears. The high-frequency probe enables precise visualisation of tissue structure, haematomas and inflammatory changes. Dynamic examination is also possible – the doctor assesses tissue during movement.
Is ultrasound suitable for young athletes and adolescents?
Yes, ultrasound is ideal diagnostics for young athletes. It does not use radiation, so it is completely safe even for frequent repeat examinations. In adolescents it is especially important for detecting growth plate injuries, growth plate inflammation (apophysitis, e.g. Osgood-Schlatter at the knee, Sever's disease at the heel) and overuse injuries.
What is the difference between ultrasound and MRI for sports injuries?
Ultrasound enables dynamic real-time examination – the doctor sees tissues during movement, which MRI cannot do. It is faster, less expensive and immediately available. MRI is better suited for deeper structures (e.g. meniscus, cruciate ligaments). The two examinations often complement each other.
When after an injury should I book an ultrasound?
We recommend an examination as soon as possible after the injury – ideally within the first 48 hours. Early diagnostics enables faster and more appropriate rehabilitation. Ultrasound is also suitable for monitoring healing during rehabilitation.
Do I need a referral?
No, at Ultrazdravje no referral is required. We provide self-pay ultrasound examinations that can be booked directly online, by phone at 01 777 42 55 or via social media.
