What is Children's Ultrasound?

Children's ultrasound (paediatric) is a completely safe and painless imaging examination specially adapted for children – from newborns to teenagers. Ultrasound does not use radiation and is the gold standard of diagnostics for children. When booking, select the appropriate service based on the examination area: abdominal ultrasound, neck ultrasound, joint ultrasound, or other. When booking, mention that the patient is a child so we can prepare accordingly.

Children's ultrasound enables examination of:

Abdomen – liver, kidneys, spleen, gallbladder
Baby hips – developmental hip dysplasia
Neck and thyroid – lymph nodes, thyroid changes
Joints – knee, ankle, elbow
Soft tissue – swelling, cysts, lumps
Testes – conditions of the testes in boys

Joint pain

Urinary difficulties
Preventive check-up
Monitoring of a known condition

How does the examination proceed?

Children's ultrasound is completely painless and safe, taking approximately 15–20 minutes:

  1. 1The child lies on the examination table, with a parent present throughout.
  2. 2The doctor applies warm gel to the skin – children often find this ticklish.
  3. 3The probe gently examines the target area – the child breathes normally during the examination.
  4. 4Images are displayed in real time on the screen, with the doctor explaining as they go.
  5. 5Results and recommendations are received immediately after the examination.

Ultrasound does not use ionising radiation – it is the most appropriate imaging examination for children. It can be repeated without restriction.

Preparation for the examination

Preparation depends on the type of examination:

Abdominal ultrasound: child must fast

Frequently asked questions

How do I book a children's ultrasound?

Select the appropriate service based on the examination area (e.g. abdominal ultrasound, neck ultrasound). When booking, mention the child's age.

Is ultrasound safe for children?

Yes, ultrasound is a completely safe examination for children of all ages. It does not use ionising radiation (unlike X-ray or CT), so it can be repeated without restriction. It is the gold standard for imaging diagnostics in children.

Is children's ultrasound painful?

No, the examination is completely painless. The child will only feel slight probe pressure on the skin and cool gel. Most children cope well with the examination, especially if they are prepared for it. Younger children can have the examination while sitting in a parent's lap.

From what age is ultrasound possible?

Ultrasound is possible from birth onwards. In infants it is essential for a screening hip examination (recommended between weeks 4 and 6 of life). There is no age restriction for most examinations.

Does the child need to fast for an abdominal ultrasound?

Yes, for an abdominal ultrasound we recommend the child fasts: infants 3 hours, younger children 4 hours, older children 6 hours without food. Fasting is not required for other examinations (hips, neck, joints).

Can a parent stay during the examination?

Yes, a parent is present throughout the examination. This is very important for the child as it gives them a sense of security. For younger children and infants a parent is essential for a calm examination.
